| Take the Six Book Challenge with Barnsley libraries |
 |
PEOPLE who have lost the reading habit, lack confidence when it comes to reading, or simply want to build up their reading stamina are invited to take Barnsley libraries’ Six Book Challenge this summer.
Those who take up the Challenge will be asked to read six books over the summer months and people who succeed will receive a prize certificate and a free Quick Reads title.
The Six Book Challenge uses Quick Reads titles to help people get back into the reading habit. They are a series of books written by well-known authors such as Ruth Rendell, Maureen Lee and Andy McNab. The series includes Richard Branson’s life story, a book of short stories and even a title on how to stop smoking.
For further information on how to take the Challenge, call in at any library or contact Jill Craven, Reader Development Officer on 01226 762313 or email JillCraven@barnsley.gov.uk

| Get online with Barnsley Library |
 |
To mark 2008 as the National Year of Reading and at a time when 80 percent of people say that they have an interest in their family history, Barnsley Libraries and Archives are delighted to announce that from this month customers can access the Ancestry website free of charge from public terminals in the Central Library, Shambles Street, and in branch libraries across the borough.
As an illustration that reading isn’t always limited to the printed word, ancestry is the most widely used family history website in the world with some 15 million users and a staggering seven billion searchable names.
It can make family history research much easier as it includes the census records for England, Wales and Scotland from 1841 to 1901, as well as the birth, marriage and death records for England and Wales from 1837-2005.
Other useful resources available on the site include British telephone directories dating back to 1880 and a whole host of military records.
Ancestry will compliment the huge number of family and local history resources already available in the Archives and Local Studies Department at Barnsley Central Library.
The Library Service also has a range of other fabulous online reference resources (for general interest, information, newspapers, music and art lovers) which can be accessed not just from the library PCs but also from a PC at home, work, school or college.
Simply visit the library website at www.barnsley.gov.uk/libraries, click on the Online Reference Resource page and type in a library membership number.
Resouces include
Credo Reference – featuring content from hundreds of reference titles such as ‘Black’s Medical Dictionary’, Know UK – a truly comprehensive resource of UK reference information. The content ranges from directories and guides through to the popular Which? Titles in electronic form such as ‘Which? CV and Interview Book’, News UK – the online service developed to provide national and regional news combining the most popular British newspaper titles in one database, Oxford Reference Collection – online access to the authoritative gems of Oxford Reference Online, Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Art Online, Oxford Music Online and Oxford Dictionary of National Biography For further information or assistance with these online resources contact Jane Lee, Information & Resources Officer Tel: 01226 773929.

| BLOOMIN’ GOOD COMPETITION FOR MALL SHOPPERS |
 |
In support of this year’s Barnsley in Bloom, The Mall Alhambra is running its very own gardening competition for customers - Mall in Bloom.
Mall in Bloom will provide the green fingered folk of Barnsley another opportunity to get their gardening efforts noticed. Customers will be able to submit photos of their gardens which will be displayed within the shopping centre, before a panel of judges cast their votes on who will walk away with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Mark Broadhead, General Manager at The Mall says: “We are delighted to launch Mall in Bloom, in support of this year’s Barnsley in Bloom celebrations, and are really looking forward to seeing the great selection of gardens that bring our customers so much enjoyment.”
Mall in Bloom will run from Monday 30 June to Friday 11 July midday. 1st prize is £150 on a Mall gift card, 2nd prize is £100 on a Mall gift card, 3rd prize is £50 on a Mall gift card, with lots of other prizes given away.
The Mall in Bloom entries will be on display in The Mall outside Woolworths from the 7th July alongside the entries and winners of this year’s Barnsley In Bloom poster competition. The overall winner Daisy Key, 11, from Burton Road Primary School, will receive a £20 Wilkinson’s voucher, and along with other Barnsley school children, will be presented with a certificate by Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley, Cllr Ken Sanderson and Mrs Beryl Sanderson.
To enter the competition, simply send a photo of your garden in to the Ask Me Point desk on the upper Mall, e-mail it to elizabeth.goodbrand@themall.co.uk OR post it to Mall Management, The Mall Barnsley, Cheapside, Barnsley, S70 1SB. The closing date for all entries is midday on Friday 11 July. All winners will be announced at 5pm on 11 July.
